The Brightworks team completed a major commercial solar repowering project in Whitby, Ontario, transforming an existing 330 kW rooftop system into a new 660 kW installation without requiring additional roof space.

The project demonstrates how advances in solar technology are creating new opportunities for commercial property owners to increase the productivity of existing solar assets.

330 kW to 660 kW

The original 330 kW system was completely removed, including the modules, racking and associated AC electrical infrastructure. This gave the Brightworks team a clean foundation from which to rebuild the system rather than attempting to retrofit new equipment around the existing installation.

The process involved removing and managing approximately 900 ballast blocks, clearing existing wire trays and hardware, and preparing the rooftop for the new system.

From there, the project moved into reconstruction.

New racking was installed while carefully managing the movement and placement of rooftop ballast to remain within engineered roof-loading requirements. The work also required coordination with other trades, including the relocation of existing rooftop infrastructure to accommodate the redesigned solar array.

The completed system incorporates new modules, electrical infrastructure and commercial inverters, ultimately increasing the site’s installed solar capacity to approximately 660 kW.

Most importantly, that additional capacity was achieved within essentially the same rooftop footprint.

Growing Opportunity

Commercial solar systems are long-lived infrastructure, but the technology installed on those systems does not stand still.

Solar modules have become substantially more powerful, while inverters, balance-of-system equipment and system design practices have continued to improve. As a result, commercial properties with older solar installations may have significantly more generation potential available from their existing rooftops.

Repowering provides an opportunity to capture that potential.

Rather than looking exclusively for additional space to install more solar, building owners can evaluate whether an existing system can be redesigned to generate more electricity from an asset they already have: the roof.

The Whitby project is a clear example of what that can mean in practice.

Team Effort

Doubling the capacity may be the most visible result, but delivering a project of this scale required months of planning, coordination and detailed field work.

From dismantling the original installation to managing roof-loading requirements, coordinating multiple trades, rebuilding the mechanical system and completing the electrical work, each stage depended on careful execution by the Brightworks Energy team and its project partners.

The result is more than a newly completed solar installation.

It is an example of how the next phase of commercial solar will increasingly include improving and optimizing the systems already operating on Canadian rooftops.
