Many of us love the idea of energy efficient light bulbs. When it comes down to it, however, we often stick with the old incandescent light bulbs, mistakenly believing that they are a cheaper alternative to their energy efficient competitors.
Though we’re creatures of habit, making the switch to energy efficient light bulbs can actually save you substantial cash in the long term, in addition to helping make your home or business more environmentally sustainable.
So, how do energy efficient bulbs stack up, and which type is best?
I. CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights)
CFLs are a much better alternative to the incandescent bulbs that we’re all too familiar with. Using about 70% less energy than incandescent bulbs and costing less upfront than LEDs, CFLs are a popular alternative where energy conservation is concerned.
Pros: Uses less energy than incandescent bulbs, relatively affordable, available in all hues
Cons: Full brightness not immediate, not compatible with dimmer switches, contains mercury (can be hazardous when bulbs are broken)
Cost average: Approximately $4CAD/bulb
II. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)
The LED light bulb is our top choice, producing the most light (brightness) using the least energy (wattage). Though LED bulbs still have a higher upfront cost than incandescent bulbs and CFLs, an LED bulb will save you the most money, cutting electricity costs immediately and lasting up to five times longer.
Pros: Long lasting and most efficient bulb available, lights up immediately, compatible with dimmer switches, available in all hues, mercury-free
Cons: Expensive
Cost average:Approximately $15CAD/bulb
Whether you choose LEDs or CFLs, switching to energy efficient bulbs will improve the carbon footprint of your home or business, and save you money in the long term.

I actually come from a background of solar, and this is exactly what we always perform an energy audit – because energy reduction is the first line of savings. Our local university just changed all their lights to CFL lights as well. Great to see!
